Crack the secret word in six guesses. The fewer you need, the more you score.

How to play

Type any real word to try the lock.
Each letter lights up: green is right and in the right place, gold is in the word but somewhere else, grey isn't in the word at all.
Use the clues to narrow it down. You have six guesses.
Crack it first time for 1,000 points, then 600, 500, 400, 300 and 200 on your sixth guess.

A 5-letter lock, then a 4-letter lock. The same for everyone, new at midnight Eastern time.

Vault after vault, each with a random theme, until one beats you.

Send a code to a friend and race to crack the same word first.

Start with a word full of common letters, like STARE or CRANE.
A gold letter tells you where the letter isn't, which is as useful as where it is.
Letters can appear twice. If you're stuck, try a double.

Is Word Vault free?

Yes, completely free in your browser on phone, tablet or computer. No download or account needed.

Can I change the colours?

Yes. Pick a theme on the Word Vault menu. Classic is the default, and there's a high-contrast option too.

How is it different from other word games?

Every daily has two locks, a 5-letter and a 4-letter word, and you can race friends online on the same word.
